Simmonds has concussion, misses game vs. Hurricanes

Wayne Simmonds has whiplash and a concussion.

The Flyers' forward did not dress for Saturday’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

General manager Paul Holmgren said before the game that Simmonds was suffering from “head and neck injuries,” then confirmed between periods that Simmonds had suffered a concussion.

“I don’t feel too bad, I have a whiplash,” Simmond said.

Simmonds took an elbow to the face from Caps defenseman John Erskine in Washington during the first period. He fell backwards on the ice, and appeared to strike his head on the ice.

“Nope, I didn’t hit the ice, but my shoulder blades did,” he said. “I was lucky. If I had hit my head it could have been a lot worse.”

Simmonds left the game and did not return. Holmgren was uncertain when his return will be and said that Simmonds would be re-evaluated on Sunday.

Erskine was given a three-game suspension by the NHL on Saturday. (see story).
