Flyers Injury Update: Downie, Lecavalier

NEWARK, N.J. -- Steve Downie, who has played just one game as a Flyer since being traded from Colorado, won’t be playing another for a while.

General manager Paul Holmgren confirmed that Downie has a concussion and repeatedly denied reports saying he suffered a fractured orbital bone in his left eye during a fight in Friday’s 7-0 loss to Washington (see story).

“Steve has a concussion and his face is swollen,” Holmgren said. “He’s got a concussion. I don’t how [bad], we’ll see. Last night, it was the reason we took him to [Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania]. It was the way he was responding. He’s much better today.

“Sometimes you get late reaction with that. That’s why people are so careful with head injuries. You watch him and see how they are over a period of time.”

Downie will be released from the hospital on Sunday.

Vinny Lecavalier, who has facial cuts and swelling from his fight, is expected back in the lineup Tuesday in Carolina.

“Vinny has a facial contusion and is sore and I expect he’ll play Tuesday,” Holmgren said.

Tye McGinn was recalled from the Phantoms to replace Lecavalier in the lineup against the Devils on Saturday (see story).
