Roseman talks QB race, new roster and more
Share This Post

Rookies and selected veterans arrived at the NovaCare Complex on Monday for the beginning of Chip Kelly's first training camp as Eagles head coach.

General manager Howie Roseman met with reporters and addressed several topics, including the QB race. Roseman said Michael Vick is "all for it" being a competition and reinforced Matt Barkley's belief that it isn't just a two-QB race between Vick and Nick Foles.

Roseman also addressed a few other topics.

On how it feels to be at training camp in Philadelphia ...

“It feels a lot different. I still feel like I’ve got to get in my car and say good-bye and get on the Turnpike and get out of here. But it’s good being home. It’s good being here, it’s good being in your office, having the facilities that we have here, and having all the benefit of having training camp in Philadelphia.”

On the roster overhaul ...

“We’re trying to make sure we get the right fits. The right scheme fits the right players for what we’re trying to do on offense, defense and then value on special teams as well, and that’s going to take time, to try to figure that out and figure what we have, and some guys are doing new things for the first time, and you’ve got to give them the benefit of the doubt. They were brought in here for a reason, and whether they fit here or they’re able to do the things that we’re asking them to do, it’s not going to happen overnight. So we’ve got to give them time to fit into the system and get comfortable, and then be able to evaluate them.

On the 90-man roster ...

“There’s been some turnover, even in the past weeks. We’re trying to find the right mix, and I think that’s going to take some time, and [there will] probably be a lot more flexibility than maybe we’ve had in the last couple years as far as trying to find the right fits and maybe getting some players in and out like you've seen us [do] the last few months."

On the number of open jobs ...

“When you combine a new staff with new schemes, there’s going to be a lot more competition, and then you have some guys that maybe didn’t fit perfectly in the last scheme and you bring them in and you realize they’re really good scheme fits here, so I think things are going to go both ways. You’ll have some guys that are really good in this scheme and are perfect fits for it and the reverse as well."

On the importance of competition at various positions ...

“Extremely important. And I think for us, once we get the pads on and see guys in live situations, we’ll figure out things a lot more clearly than we did in the spring."
