McCoy named FedEx Ground Player of the Week
Share This Post

This was a no-brainer.

LeSean McCoy, whose 184 rushing yards against the Redskins on Monday night was 83 more than any other running back during Week 1, on Friday was named the FedEx Ground Player of the Week, awarded each week to the NFL’s top running back based on online fan voting.

This is the third time in his career McCoy has earned the weekly FedEx award. He got it for his 122-yard, two-touchdown performance in a win over the Rams on opening day 2011 and also for his career-best 185 rushing yards against the Cowboys in October of 2011.

McCoy was also the 2011 FedEx Ground Player of the Year.

All weekly FedEx Ground Player of the Week winners are eligible for the annual postseason award.

McCoy’s 184 rushing yards are second-most in Eagles history on opening day behind only Duce Staley’s 201 yards in the 2000 opener in Dallas. Staley is now McCoy’s position coach.

The only other NFL tailback to run for 100 yards in Week 1 was the Patriots’ Shane Vereen, who rushed for 101 yards against the Bills.

The Eagles face the Chargers Sunday afternoon at the Linc.

The only player in Eagles history to rush for 100 yards or more in each of the team’s first two games is Herschel Walker, who did it in 1992 with 112 against the Saints and 115 against the Cards.

“I don’t really get into the whole yardage and different type of records,” McCoy said this week. “That stuff will come. I worry about winning.

“The last couple years, we haven’t been winning. When I got to the Eagles, we were a winning team and teams feared to play us. I want to get back to that level before I can start talking about yards and all that other stuff.”
