For Kelly, it will be hard not to start Foles
Share This Post

It seems everyone has an opinion regarding the Eagles' quarterback position. So here are my two cents.

When the Eagles line up against the Dallas Cowboys at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field, I believe Chip Kelly will go with Nick Foles as his starting quarterback.

Clearly, Kelly has not made that decision yet, nor will he be in any rush this week to anoint Foles over Michael Vick the starter. But based on what Vick told our Derrick Gunn on Saturday in Tampa -- he has "a long road" back to health (see story) -- and Foles' performance against the Bucs, Foles makes the most sense.

Why rush Vick back when Foles is playing at a pretty high level? I do believe that when Vick is completely healthy, he is a better fit for Kelly's offense. That said, it is hard to argue with Foles' numbers this season.

One glaring difference between the two quarterbacks this season has been their production in the red zone. This season, Foles has completed 5 of 9 passes inside the 20 for 35 yards for three passing touchdowns and one rushing score. That translates to a 104.2 passer rating. Vick's numbers in the red zone are not nearly as impressive -- 5 for 19 for 38 yards, one passing touchdown, two rushing touchdowns and a red-zone passer rating of 57.1.

Foles' numbers are skewed a little bit againt two winless football teams. This week's matchup with the Cowboys will tell us all a lot more about Foles and his ability to lead this football team. I understand the opposing argument that Vick should not lose his starting job to injury, but if you're Kelly, it will be very difficult to sit a quarterback who has just won two football games and has given you no reason not to keep him with the first team.

Kelly has been very coy about his dealing with his players, and I don't blame him. Wait until the last minute and make the call. The Cowboys will have to prepare all week for two totally different quarterbacks.

Let's see if Foles can continue to shine while Vick heals. Dallas Week is always fun, but the quarterback race makes it that much more entertaining.
