Flyers Notes: Zolnierczyk likely facing suspension for hit
Share This Post

Harry Zolnierczyk had a five-minute major rescinded by the NHL last Thursday for a kneeing penalty incurred against Washington’s Mathieu Perreault.

That’s not going happen to his latest five-minute major, this one for charging, in which Zolnierczyk caught Ottawa’s Mike Lundin with a shoulder to head, also drawing a game misconduct.

Look for at least a one-game suspension coming this week.

Lundin, who had to be helped off the ice and could be concussed, did not come back in the game which very often works against the offending player when “Shanabans” are handed down.

The play happened midway into the first period.

Zolnierczyk would not discuss the incident after the Flyers taut 2-1 victory on Saturday.

Not surprisingly, others did. Reactions varied.

“I thought it was the proper call and the proper circumstances will be taken by the league and repercussions should come from the league according to what they think,” said Sens coach Paul MacLean.

Flyers coach Peter Laviolette disagreed.

“You look at it like Harry didn’t really do anything wrong as he was lining up,” Laviolette said. “He didn’t take strides, everything was down, his arms were down and it was just an impact.

“It made a loud noise, sometimes the hits that make the loud noise get looked at, It appeared going into the hit that everything was in check.”

Ottawa’s Kaspars Daugavins went after Zac Rinaldo in a fight seconds after the hit.

“I saw the last second of the hit,” Daugavins said. “He took a big one and I knew it wasn’t a clean hit, so I went after whoever was closest and it was Rinaldo.

“I didn’t really get a chance to throw any punches because he locked up my arm right before the fight. I don’t know, I was just sticking up for Lundy [Lundin].”

Rinaldo’s reaction?

“I said it was beautiful,” he smiled. “From my eyes, I thought it was beautiful. I thought it was a great hit, but I only saw it for a split second.”

What’s it all about, Alfie?
It’s a cold day in hell when Daniel Alfredsson gets tossed for a game.

Yet that’s what occurred with less than eight minutes left in Saturday’s game. Alfie was hit with a five-minute major for cross-checking Rinaldo, plus he got a game misconduct.

“It was a chippy game, no question,” Alfredsson said. “I think we took exception to some of their hits and felt like the referees didn’t call everything that maybe they should have.

“We stuck up for each other and obviously my 5 minutes kind of hurt us in our chance to get back, but they killed it off and we got really close at the end to tie it up.”

Why did you go after Rinaldo?

“Well, it’s a bad play by him,” Alfredsson replied. “[Chris] Phillips is in a vulnerable position right by the boards and [Rinaldo] hits him from the side, behind kind of, and I didn’t really know if Chris was injured at the time or not, but I did not like that hit at all.”

Rinaldo thought it was “cool” he got Alfie riled.

“I think everyone is gunning for me sometimes, but that is just my mindset,” Rinaldo said. “I think it was pretty cool that Danny Alfredsson came after me. I always watched him growing up so I think it was pretty cool.”

He got thrown out which doesn’t happen very often.

“No it doesn’t,” Rinaldo said. “I’m just glad I got him thrown out.”
