Brayden Schenn was suspended one game for his hit on Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov in the second period of Tuesday's loss to New Jersey.
"Rather than delivering a legal body check, Schenn launches up off the ice prior to contact, into Volchenkov, making contact with volchenkov's head," said the NHL's head of discipline, Brendan Shanahan, in a video statement. "This is charging."
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Schenn will forfeit $4,702.70. It is his first-ever suspension.
The Flyers were trailing 2-0 when the play occurred.
Replays from at least one angle clearly showed Schenn left his feet to deliver the hit to a larger opponent.
Neither club commented on the hit after the game because in real time it seemed like a good, solid check.
“Yeah, I got a call from Homer (Flyers GM Paul Holmgren) on the bus last night and wasn’t exactly sure why,” Schenn said at Wednesday’s practice, prior to his telephone hearing. “Maybe a little bit surprised.”
There was no penalty whistled.
“Quite a few [times] I looked at it,” Schenn said. “It seemed what it was called – no penalty on the play. I’m not gonna make any comments until I have that hearing.”
He also said it was “not a revenge play,” against Volchenkov for a hit against Schenn in Game 5 of the playoffs last spring, or because Volchenkov had concussed Danny Briere during the regular season in 2011-12.
“Not a revenge play at all,” Schenn said. “I think it’s him having his head down and me coming off the bench and seeing that. It’s not a revenge play at all.”
The Flyers were trailing 2-0 at the time of Schenn’s hit and went on to lose the game, 3-0. Schenn finished with 14:01 of time on ice, as well as a five-minute major for fighting incurred in the closing seconds of the game.
