We continue recapping the Sixers' season by evaluating each member of the roster.
Hollis Thompson is next:
Position: Small Forward
Status: Free Agent
Signature game of 2013-14
Thompson’s best game of the season happened in April, an indication of how far his game came from a D-league player a year ago to an NBA starter this season. On April 5, he scored a career-high 18 points against the Brooklyn Nets. He was 6 of 9 from the floor, including 6 of 8 from three-point range.
Thompson averaged six points on the season, but his 18 points against the Nets was one of his 14 double-figure scoring games.
From April 6, 2014
It was a Saturday night and Thompson connected on 6 of 8 attempts from three with two of those makes coming in the final 29 seconds, when the Sixers were desperate but not out of the game against the Nets, who ultimately won by four points.
“Hollis is one of these guys that has invested time and to see him come out and get rewarded for that especially in the situation that he did,” Brett Brown said (see story). “He sat and sat and this is classic NBA stuff, now come in and make a three to bail us out [to try and] help us win a game and he did.”
Thompson in 2013-14
Thompson came off the bench for the first 15 games of the 77 he appeared in. He started the next 18 games and then was relegated back to the bench. He later would make his way back to the starting lineup to finish out the final six weeks of the season.
Thompson led all NBA rookies with his .401 three-point field goal percentage. He averaged 6 points and 3.2 rebounds playing 22.6 minutes per game. And he proved to be a worthy defender.
Hollis Thompson would likely not start on the other 29 teams in the NBA, but he is an NBA talent. He invested countless hours on his shooting with player development coach Billy Lange and it has paid off.
In November, Thompson shot .300 from behind the arc. By January, he was shooting over 40 percent from long distance for the month, and in April, he shot .483.
Defensively, Thompson has the kind of potential he had with his shot; the skills are there. Instruction and his commitment to getting better will make him a solid defender for the Sixers next season. Yes, I believe they will bring him back.
Thompson is what Brett Brown spent the year looking for with the 23 players that, at some point, were in his gym. Thompson is a keeper.
On Hollis Thompson…
“Hollis has been big for us this year with three-pointers and making plays. Lately he has been shooting the ball with great confidence and I want him to continue to do that.”
- Thaddeus Young April 6, 2014
“He is a blue collar kid that has come in scratching and clawing doing anything he can to find NBA minutes. [Friday], his total package, all those things people have been working with him on he was able to show them all in a game that was a great win for us.”
- Brett Brown November 24, 2013
“A big part of shooting is just shooting the same shot every time. That comes from the team doing the same thing over and over with your everyday regimen.”
- Hollis Thompson February 10, 2014
