Barkley on Sixers not having a coach: It's a 'joke'

The Sixers have received mixed reviews about not having named a head coach yet.

And Charles Barkley -- never shy from expressing his opinion -- made it crystal clear that he doesn't like the decision.

"I think that's one of the silliest things that I've seen in sports in a long time," Barkley said on Comcast SportsNet's Friday edition of "Philly Sports Talk." "I'm in Philly during the summer as you know, and I'm watching and reading every day -- to not have a coach under contract by now, I think that's a joke. I don't know what they're waiting on. You're playing summer-league games, people need to know who's in charge. They got players who are playing in the summer league, they got assistant coaches coaching the team. You just can't bring somebody in, and him have instant credibility -- he has to build rapport with the players."

Assistant coach Michael Curry coached the Sixers in the Orlando Pro Summer League, in which the team went 1-4. The Sixers remain the only team in the NBA without a head coach.

According to ESPN's Marc Stein on Wednesday, the Sixers' search is down to Curry and Spurs assistant Brett Brown.

"No matter how many candidates Sixers interview," Stein wrote, "coaching insiders continue to insist Philly job is going to Michael Curry or Brett Brown," (see story).

The Sixers went 34-48 last year in their final season under Doug Collins.
