Pettibone throws; still has hurdles to clear

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Phillies pitcher Jonathan Pettibone resumed throwing on flat ground Saturday, five days after receiving a cortisone injection in his sore right shoulder.

“Everything was fine,” Pettibone said.

The right-hander cautioned that he won’t know whether he’s out of the woods until he gets back on a mound and ramps up the intensity of his throwing.

“Hopefully I’ll be on a mound within a week,” he said. “I’m working my way back.”

Pettibone missed the final two months last season with similar shoulder issues.

Pitching coach Bob McClure videotaped Pettibone’s throwing session Saturday. McClure focused specifically on Pettibone’s lower half.

“We’re seeing if we can prevent some of the arm things I’ve had in the past by using my lower half more to take pressure off my arm,” Pettibone said.
